Built between 1770 and 1825, in neo-palladian English style, the building followed a plan by the English architect John Carr, which originally established four façades, comprising an area of 28721 square meters. The Hospital’s chapel was supposed to be located on the courtyard (circular plan on the inside and square on the outside).
The first master builders were José Francisco Moreira and Caetano Pereira.
The façade is composed by five bodies on different plans. The first floor has full arched windows and doors. The central body, prominent in relation to the others, is composed of an opened gallery, with six Doric columns, and ended by a fronton. The second floor, retreated in relation to the intermediate bodies, has windows decorated with triangular frontons, except for the corners, which have segmental arches. The third floor forms a mezzanine.
The hall contains the busts of the main benefactors of the hospital: D. Lopo de Almeida, João Teixeira Guimarães, Joaquim José Campos and D. António Carvalho Leme Cernache.
