The Portuguese Photography Centre/Ministry of Culture is based in Porto at the former building of the Court of Appeal Gaol, which was restored and adapted for that purpose. The institution is responsible for the state policy on photography. The Building was restored and adapted for its present functions, according to the project of the team of architects, coordinated by Eduardo Souto de Moura and Humberto Vieira.
The attributions and responsibilities of the PPC/MC are divided into three main sectors, which aim to preserve and enrich the photographic heritage (Lisbon and Porto archives, as well as the National Photography Collection); to develop the knowledge of Portuguese and international photography (exhibitions, in the country and abroad, publications, workshops, research); and to support projects which are presented in the fields of contemporary photographic production, publication, training and archives.
